Obituary

Sonia Dodd, (Natowohkoto Kakiii – Holy Rock Woman) of Calgary, AB, passed away on Monday, April 21, 2025, at the Foothills Country Hospice, at the age of 61.

Sonia was born in Edmonton, AB, on August 3, 1963. Sonia is survived by her loving husband, Larry Dodd, daughter Paige Dodd (Alex Wihak), son Ryan Dodd, and her grandchildren, Sienna and Caeden. Sonia is also survived by her mother, Florence Large Yaholnitsky, sisters Virginia (Gord) Hager and Mavis (Rob) DaSilva, brothers Brian Large, Cameron (Cynthia) Mason, and Orest Yaholnitsky and many nieces and nephews.

Sonia was predeceased by her father Ozor Ernest (Ernie) Yaholnitsky, brother Kevin Yaholnitsky, and sister Charlene Large.

Sonia was the glue that held her family together, a true matriarch. She will always be the rock of our family and her many words of wisdom, advice and life lessons will live on. Sonia was so full of life and a light to all that knew her. She touched so many lives in such a positive way. She always had a smile on her face and welcomed discussions with anyone and everyone. She loved working in her garden and taking her favourite “child” coco on walks for hours. She was filled with love when spending time with family and their Sunday dinners, relaxing on the beach at the trailer, and the many family vacations and the everlasting memories created.

Her recent connections with those in the Indigenous community and Church groups filled Sonia’s cup. Her new-found sewing skills were put to use creating beautiful traditional ribbon skirts with her cousin Carla Obuck.

Sonia’s positive outlook on life was infectious. She always looked for the silver lining in all situations and even through her courageous battle this past year, she remained positive and had a bright outlook. During this past year, when Sonia was undergoing the hardest time in her life, she was selflessly teaching everyone around her the importance of friendships and family, unknowingly influencing those around her and often with a sense of humour.

If friends and family so desire, memorial tributes may be made directly in Sonia’s name to the Foothills Country Hospice Society, P.O. Box 274, Okotoks, AB, T1S 1S1, www. Countryhospice.org.

Funeral Services will be held at McDougall United Church (8516 Athabasca St. S.E. Calgary, AB. T2H 1S1) on Thursday, May 1, 2025 at 11:00 am, with celebration of life to follow immediately after.
